We love seeing what “extra” looked like in the past, and this 1886 origin boutique hotel in Charleston, South Carolina, dominates Harleston Village with unabashed opulence. Double staircases, columns, and pink walls with white quoins welcome you under a mansard roof topped with a matching dome. Inside doubles down, with truly stunning hand-carved molding throughout, inlaid floors, Tiffany glass, and crystal chandeliers almost everywhere you look. If a hotelier designed a building like this today, you might roll your eyes, but the historical value is astounding. Anyone interested in Southern history, the indulgences of the rich, and Second Empire architecture, will not want to miss the Wentworth Mansion. Even if you know nothing about historical South Carolinian architecture, you’re in for some gorgeous pampering and the best introduction one could ask for. What are the rooms like? While not identical, all rooms have a similar elegant sumptuousness, draped in luxury curtains with rich upholstery. They’ve worked to preserve many of the mansion’s historical features, and most rooms have their original working gas fireplaces. Others have gorgeous glass work and wainscoting that gives a definite Gilded Age flavor. Suites go above and beyond, impeccably designed lines of rooms with beds, dining areas, sitting areas, and more. All rooms include plush robes for lounging around, turndown service (chocolate made in-house!), fresh flowers, and a digital New York Times subscription for your stay. The newest part of each room are the bathrooms, which have all been more than updated. You’ll find whirlpool tubs, Gilchrist & Soames’ bath amenities, and multi-head walk-in showers. The Inn is perfect for those who like the red-brick vibe of the historical but want decided modernity in their accommodation. You’ll get high ceilings, exposed brick and some serious vibes. Other rooms range from Traditional Queen to Premium King, which includes a stunning furnished balcony. The two rooms of the Landmark suite offer both a sumptuous King bed and a gorgeously furnished sitting room. The decor throughout elegantly walks the line between romantic and nautical. Soft blues, whites and grays feel like they were pulled from the sea, while clever decorative touches of yellow patterns and warm wood make the rooms feel friendly. Each room comes with a chic waffle weave robe, mini-fridges, 49″ TVs, and sound machines. TL;DR What makes this hotel special? Why should I stay here? Charleston’s award-winning Spectator Hotel has a lobby bar that is a suave tribute to the Roaring Twenties. While we find the rooms more modern in their appearance, as are the hotel exteriors, the bygone-era-like effect lingers throughout. We love the service here – they have a small team of classically trained butlers wandering around, always at your service, but somehow not OTT. The focal point lobby and bar serve as a kind of living room here for guests, and with such small numbers staying at any one time, the atmosphere is intimate and friendly. It’s a very popular hotel, and also small, with just 41 rooms, so we’d recommend booking ahead.   What are the rooms like? Premier Penthouse Suites. We think their entry-level rooms are good value relative to the upper-end suites we think, especially the ones with the balconies, and all the rooms seem to come with good views. None of them are particularly spacious though we have to say. But once that’s out of the way we find it difficult to find fault with anything. They are bright, cheery, and mainly dressed in white. They have king-size beds, stylish lighting, plush carpets, and velvet headboards alongside modern hotel amenities such as Nespresso coffee machines and cable TV. Gourmet continental breakfasts are ordered in fresh from a local bakery and delivered to your room for example. There are many good restaurants nearby though, and your personal butler can pick up food from any number of them and deliver it to your room. There are drinks though in abundance at the marvelously atmospheric bar, which is also a popular spot with locals. It does snacks and small bites alongside its famous retro cocktails. Charleston has two of the USA’s very best boutique hotels – the smaller, more intimate, Spectator Hotel, and this one here, the very grand, also award-winning, Hotel Bennett. On the large side for a boutique hotel, it has 179 luxurious rooms and suites, and lots of lovely common space including a rooftop terrace with swimming pool, four drinking and dining venues, and a small spa and gym. In between we have some spacious suites and rooms some of which also have balconies and nice views. Whatever you choose we’d say you are guaranteed a very high level of comfort and luxury. They all come with comfortable king-size, or double queen, beds, sofas, work desks, cable TVs and coffee makers, high-tech controls for lighting and curtains, and 24-hour room service. Their signature restaurant is Gabrielle, a sophisticated fine dining venue which has a lovely outdoor terrace overlooking Marion Square. It also has a stylish, lively bar. The menu lies somewhere between Southern U.S. and European, particularly French. Lots of great fresh seafood too. The Patisserie serves a range of coffee and has a European vibe, croissants and all. Fiat Lux by the swimming pool is a sleek rooftop cocktail bar with a broad wine list and also does small bites and snacks – club sandwiches, salads, cheese & charcuterie boards etc. Then there is the swanky Camellia champagne bar with its mirrored ceilings and pink marble floors and table tops. Other facilities include a gym, open 24 hours, and a spa, with spa treatments and massages etc. also available in your own room. Carefully designed by the ever-impressive Method Co., The Pinch occupies a set of historic buildings in the middle of Charleston, South Carolina’s famous elegance. They’ve nailed the goal to both fit in and stand out, deftly incorporating the buildings’ historical features into a more contemporary aesthetic that nonetheless seems to speak the same language as the surrounding Gilded Age, Civil War-era establishments. Guest rooms are roomy, with king beds, washers & dryers, smart TVs, notably well-stocked minibars and at least a kitchenette in all. It’s like waking up in your dream studio apartment. If your dream apartment is not, nor will ever be, a studio, the suites have similar amenities with separate living areas and lots of extra space. They have gorgeous one-bedroom options and their two-bedroom, two-bathroom suite overlooks the street for the best in people watching. The quality of amenities and attention to detail in everything really elevates The Pinch as a place to stay. It’s obvious in the design, with bespoke furniture pieces, first-class artwork and sophisticated accent walls that add a soft, artful personality. The houseplants are a lovely touch as well. Bathrooms are, as you’d expect, gorgeous in appearance and well-considered in design. They’re sunny and airy with white tile, soft wood and Aesop bath amenities that give even more of that this-is-your-brightest-timeline feeling. That being said, you’ll love Lowland, the hotel’s tavern, and everything at The Quinte, the hotel’s oyster bar, is a don’t miss. Since its arrival, the small enclave of a restaurant, named after the billiard’s hall that occupied the hotel’s historic building, has captivated Charleston’s dining scene. The hotel spa is a small, serene room in the center of the complex, where you can wind down from the day with a long massage, or luxurious facial.
